Railway cottage conversion blends old and new harmoniously

Bordered by the railway line between Amsterdam and Ijmuiden, in Velsen, The Netherlands, this cottage was recently transformed and improved. The project was the work of Zecc Architecten and was completed in 2012.

After the renovation and after the cottage also got an expansion, the total area it covers is now of 190 square meters. You can clearly see the distinction between the old building and the new additions.

Although the contrast is strong, old and new come together beautifully and form a harmonious ambiance.

The hardness of steel, concrete and glass across waving grass, shells and wood. The extension was built of steel, wood and glass and if you combine these with the landscape and the soft dunes you get an awesome picture.

Part of the reason why the new owners wanted to add an expansion to the cottage was to better connect with the nature and the views. It’s why you see here these glass walls and sliding doors. The living spaces are connected to the outdoors through the glass surfaces but also directly.

The great difference between the old and new can also be seen inside. As soon as the exposed brick walls end, smooth and crisp white walls begin.

Even so, the décor is cohesive and harmonious. This is achieved though the accent features such as the pendant lights, the furniture, the artwork and the rugs.

It’s unusual to see such strong contrasts inside a house. It’s interesting how the architects managed to preserve the character and history of the cottage while also giving it a modern update. The original elements were not altered by the modern additions.

A very beautiful feature is the white staircase. It has a very sharp and sculptural look and sits in the center of the living area, dividing it into several zones.

Most of the original elements that were preserved complement the overall décor beautifully. For example, the arched walls look just stunning here and the new windows give the room a balanced and cozy look.
