DIY Sliding Bookshelf Doors
Bookshelves are great storage solutions, but you also want them to look good. Books, knick-knacks, and other display items can sit out in the open. But if you have other items that are more unsightly, you may not necessarily want them sitting out on an open shelf. But this tutorial is an easy and inexpensive way to hide such items and create a great looking bookshelf.
All you need is some cardboard or foam core board, scissors, and paper, fabric, or paint to decorate. Start by measuring the height and width of one of your shelves. Then cut a piece of cardboard that is exactly the same height as the shelf, and just over half the width. Cut one more piece of the same size. You’ll then want to place them onto your shelf to make sure that they stand up and can slide along the length of the shelf.
Next comes the fun part. You probably don’t want plain old cardboard showing on your bookcase, so you can just decorate it to your own taste to make sure that it looks nice with your room. For the piece pictured, I simply took some patterned tissue paper and secured it to the cardboard with mod podge. Then I used an additional coat of mod podge over the top of the tissue paper. But you could also paint the cardboard, use fabric and mod podge, or even use wallpaper or scrapbook paper.
Once your doors are all decorated. you can simply place them on the shelf standing up and be done with it. But if you want them to be more secure, you can add three stripes of hot glue running along the length of the shelf to serve as sort of a track. Don’t actually glue the doors to the shelf, but make sure the glue runs in a straight line from one side to the other so that they can hold the doors upright and make sure they can slide easily from one side to the other. You could also choose to glue a little button or other small item onto each door to serve as handles.
That’s all there is to it! Now you have a bookshelf that can display all of your favorite items but also hide the ones you don’t necessarily want to show off.
